About Us

Who we are

The Theory of Living Matter group is an initiative to build a network for researchers interested in the theoretical analysis and modelling of biological phenomena. The group aims at bringing together theoretically oriented scientists (physicists, mathematicians, bioinformaticians, data scientists and others) and experimental biologists and biophysicists on a postdoctoral or young group leader level.

  • For experimentalists, the network provides a local platform via which connections to theorists can be established and collaborations for data analysis and modelling can be initiated.
  • For theorists, the network provides a way to connect with each other to discuss methods, keep up with the most exciting developments in biological research and connect to biologists with an interest in theoretical contributions to their projects.

First initiated by a group of theoretical physicists from the Cavendish Laboratory and the DAMTP, the network rapidly attracted attention throughout Cambridge. As of 2023, we have over 1200 subscribed members at all different stages of their academic careers from across the globe.

Meet the organisers

What we do

Within the framework of TLM, there are different types of events that take place throughout the year.

  • Our largest events are the general meetings, evening talks with accomplishead speakers and catering which is now a hybrid (in-person and online) session.
  • In our pub tutorials, we learn about exciting new experimental or theoretical approaches from junior/senior scientists in an informal atmosphere.
  • Sporadically, we organise special seminars, we learn about exciting new experimental or theoretical approaches from junior scientists in an informal atmosphere.
  • We also understand ourselves as a forum for junior scientists to introduce themselves and their work and to connect with others in the field. On our webpage, we provide a platform to introduce scientists to events in the field.
  • In the past, we highlight a selected recent paper on our website that beautifully exemplifies how theory promotes the understanding of biological systems. If you have suggestions for papers that should be featured, please write to ucam-tlm-organisers@lists.cam.ac.uk!
